ICMR Chief Soumya Swaminathan to be WHO's New Deputy Director General

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday appointed Soumya Swaminathan as Deputy Director General for Programmes of the United Nations agency based in Geneva, Switzerland that is concerned with international public health. The 58-year-old Swaminathan is a pediatrician and a clinical scientist known for her research on Tuberculosis (TB). Most recently, Swaminathan was Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
